Adult Acne-Fight it out!
Adult Acne-Fight it out!
Yes, adults get acne! We mean adults in their 30s, 40s and even 50s. You may wonder why am I am I getting the teenager syndromes? Well, there are several reasons and this is more common among women than in men. (excerpts taken from the American Academy of Dermatology)
1. Hormonal level imbalances: Women often experience fluctuating hormones:
- Around their periods
- During pregnancy, peri-menopause, and menopause
- After discontinuing (or starting) birth control pills
2. Stress: Researchers have found a relationship between stress and acne flare-ups. In response to stress, our bodies produce more androgens (a type of hormone). These hormones stimulate the oil glands and hair follicles in the skin, which can lead to acne. This explains why acne can be an ongoing problem when we find ourselves under constant stress.
3. Family history: Does a close blood relative, such as a parent, brother, or sister have acne? Findings from research studies suggest that some people may have a genetic predisposition for acne. People who have this predisposition seem more likely to get adult acne.
4. Hair and skin care products: If you have adult acne, you should read the labels on your skin care and hair care products. Some ingredients to stay away from in your skin care products may include comedones (e.g. cocoa butter, Isopropyl myristate, pigments and dyes, coal tar) to name a few as well as ingredients that cause severe dryness.
Contrary to popular beliefs that adults with acne condition should stay away from products containing oil of any sort, is a fad!
This is because oils (that are hypoallergenic) help to treat many skin problems that occur as our skin matures, such as sun damage, pigmentation, fine lines and loss of tone. So many of my customers in their 30s and late 40s are relieved when they learn they can address pimples while preventing wrinkles, ending the daunting dilemma between treating their acne or aging.
Conventional acne solutions involve harsh, drying acids, peels and astringents that lead to dehydrated, devitalized and sensitized skin. Using nourishing natural facial oils actually feeds, protects and supports our skin tissue, helping to restore its balance and ward off pimples while promoting moisture and hydration. Other ways to reduce stress related acne is by using adaptogens that help balance out the onset of stress on your skin and contain similar to the popular salicylic acid derivatives to combat acne without making your skin dry, irritated and more prone to sensitivity.
